Tidal Bore Rafting Tours

Experience the excitement and adventure of TIDAL BORE RAFTING on Nova Scotia's largest river, the Shubenacadie. The Shubenacadie River feeds into the Atlantic Ocean's Bay of Fundy, where the highest tides in the world are found. The incoming tides of the Bay of Fundy enter the "V"-shaped Cobequid Bay, where the water begins to "pile-up" as the tide progresses into the shallowing and narrowing river. This phenomenon creates what is known as a "tidal bore". The Tidal Bore represents the leading wave of the incoming tide. The Tidal Bore can range in size from a few inches up to 10 feet!

Behind the tidal bore, tidal rapids form as the river changes direction and water surges upstream at incredible speeds. These tidal rapids have standing waves that can range in height from 3' to 16'. The tidal rapids occur when the incoming tide flows over sand bars. The combination of the fast moving tide and the shallow sand bars creates tidal rapids. Tidal water continues to pour into the Shubenacadie until high tide, then the flow of the river reverses again and the tidal waters drain back into the Bay of Fundy until low tide. Then the whole phenomenon repeats itself. Between low tide and high tide the river's depth will change by 20 to 30 feet, depending on the time of year.

Our tours are timed so as to witness and raft on the incoming Tidal Bore. After the Tidal Bore reaches deeper water, we raft on the Tidal Rapids that form. With towering, multicolored cliffs providing the backdrop, your tidal bore rafting trip is as scenic as it is exciting. See for yourself why Lonely Planets, an international guide book for environmental enthusiasts, has declared "Rafting the Shubenacadie Tidal Bore" as one of their Top 10 Canadian Adventures.
